What is a Gas Turbine Power Plant?
A Gas Turbine Power Plant (GTPP) is a high-tech energy complex that uses gas turbine engines to produce thermal and electrical energy. It typically consists of several main components:
- Gas Turbine Engine: Converts thermal energy into mechanical energy by burning fuel in a combustion chamber, then expanding hot gases through a turbine.
- Generator: Transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy. The rotating rotor inside the stator induces an electric current.
- Control System: A set of devices (sensors, controllers) that manage temperature, pressure, and other parameters, ensuring optimal performance.
How It Works
The principle of a GTPP is straightforward: fuel is supplied to the combustion chamber, where it burns and heats the gas. The hot gas enters the turbine, expanding to create mechanical energy, which turns the generator rotor. This rotation induces electric current in the stator windings, producing electricity.
A gas turbine can also generate heat energy. Exhaust gases normally exit through a flue, but if heat recovery is provided, they are directed to a heat exchanger or boiler for heating premises. Such stations can be large or small, installed either indoors or outdoors, depending on design and configuration.
Gas turbines can run on various fuels, including natural gas, liquefied natural gas (LNG), or diesel. Gas-fueled GTPPs offer highly attractive construction costs and low operating expenses.
Project Overview – 5 MW GTPP at SEZ "Maimak"
To ensure reliable power supply for buildings and structures at the SEZ "Maimak" development site — given their distance from main power transmission lines — Temirlan-Oil decided to build its own 5 MW gas turbine power plant. This station will not only meet the industrial needs of the complex but also provide electricity and heat to nearby agricultural facilities.
